“Hey Al, what’s a ‘software caretaker’”? I’ve been asked this quite a few times since I updated my profile and put it in as a tongue-in-cheek job description. I’m still not sure quite how to describe it… so far I’ve tried “safe pair of hands”, “part time dogsbody”, “software archaeologist”, “that guy who doesn’t mind doing the crappy maintenance jobs that nobody else wants to do”. TBH I’m still working on the elevator pitch 😏 Basically these days I’m a part-timer when it comes to paid work; after nearly 40 years at the code face I just can’t be arsed with that full-time office-based grind any more, but I’m not ready to hang up the towel just yet. It dawned on me recently that with my broad range of skills in many market sectors using a hefty array of technologies (many or most of which would be called obsolete now) I’m well set up to offer my services as a “caretaker”, looking after legacy systems that are happily lumbering along with only the occasional need for a quick upgrade, a hack to keep them alive, a nudge into compatibility with a newer OS etc. It seems that most permies I’ve talked to don’t enjoy that sort of work, as it’s perceived as a kick into the weeds. Similarly, the contractors that I know aren’t up for such short-term fiddly work. Me, I don’t mind. So if you’ve got some “ancient” system that needs a bit of TLC (or even a rewrite!), drop me a line. Chances are I’ve probably worked on something similar back in the day 🤣 No job too small. What I love about Agile is that it is more than following a recipe for success. Teams are made of diverse people, and these are empowered in different ways! Learning how to measure Agile and how to experiment safely can bring nice surprises like the ones Sara Mendes Chaves shared in her blog post.

I've already heard about it, but it is nice to have a confirmation about that. This is one thing that surprises me about both frontend development and design as disciplines in the industry. I've heard some predictions that designers will be expected to become more technical. Recently, we've seen Design Engineer emerge as a role. Frontend engineering is becoming increasingly complex and is often more of a full-stack set of responsibilities. Given this tendency to overlap disciplines, it surprises me that digital accessibility is still largely isolated as a specialization. Often, an accessibility specialist is the person who provides consultation, but isn't hands-on. I would like to see the crafts of design, frontend, and even frontend architecture extend to include accessibility. People who specialize in their craft know it better than anyone else and have the potential to integrate accessibility into their craft in innovative ways. Specialists in web accessibility don't always have a deep knowledge of the frontend frameworks, architecture patterns, or design tools in order to understand exactly how to implement accessibility. I'd like to bridge this gap. #Accessibility #DigitalAccessibility #InclusiveDesign #AccessibleDesign #FrontendDevelopment

AppSweep just got a big update with many new issue types for you to check out! One particularly nice feature I'd like to highlight is that we now also generate code snippets for iOS findings: Our Android analysis has shown decompiled Java code snippets for a long time already, but if you're a bit familiar with iOS binaries, you may know that decompiling them to a form that looks similar to the source code the developer initially wrote is rather challenging. iOS apps are usually written using a mix of very different languages like Swift, ObjectiveC, C or C++. Because of this, showing generic C-like snippets for all findings (which is what regular decompilers would emit) would not really help AppSweep users with locating the places in their source code they need to fix. Instead, we made sure to detect the specific languages that were used in the surroundings of specific findings and aim to provide a code snippet that mimics the original source code as closely as possible.
